Sometimes people need to work on goal attainment and accountability more so than participate in therapy. Coaching is a goal-directed and future-oriented way of helping people set and attain goals. Coaching is not designed to understand and heal from past problems and traumas; it is designed to support a relatively healthy person develop in personal and/or professional ways. For this reason, coaching relies on conversations and relationships that can be more directive in nature and that focus on current progress towards future goals.

Ways in which coaching is different from therapy: there are no diagnoses given, no treatment plans written and there are no therapeutic interventions utilized. Insurance companies require a diagnosis, treatment plan and evidence-based therapeutic interventions for billing purposes; since coaching does not provide any of these things, coaching is not billable to insurance companies. Progress notes are recorded for coaching services, but they do not have billing codes listed on them and they are marked as “coaching services” – for this reason, they are not typically eligible for HSA and FSA payments and/or reimbursements. Coaching services at Hope and Meaning Counseling are private-pay only at $75/hour with masters-level, pre-licensed clinicians. Cash, credit and debit cards are accepted for payment.
